Stroke awareness and prevention

Clarian is pleased to announce that it has been designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, an organization that certifies that a stroke center meets the highest standards of care to all stroke patients.

Every 53 seconds an American has a stroke, totaling about 750,000 each year. Every 3 minutes someone dies of a stroke, claiming almost 168,000 lives each year. Stroke is the No. 1 cause of disability in America.

If you have any acute stroke symptoms, call 911 immediately.

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg - especially on one side of the body.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

According to J.D. Fleck, MD, medical director of stroke services for Clarian Health, the most effective action people can do to prevent a stroke is to monitor their blood pressure. If it’s elevated, they should work to reduce it with the help of their doctor. For more prevention tips, click here.
